There is uncertainty surrounding the marriage between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) following President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s decision to drop Atupele Muluzi in the 24 member cabinet released on Wednesday night.
In the past five years, DPP and UDF were in relationship where Atupele was offered a Ministerial post. He served as Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and he was later moved to the Ministry of Health and Population.
Despite some top officials in the UDF including former Member of Parliament for Balaka North Lucius Banda rejecting the partnership, the two parties went on supporting each other up to the May 21 tripartite election.
The marriage between the two parties affected the performance of UDF in the polls as its leader only got less than 300, 000 votes national wide.
The development also saw UDF MPs dropping from 14 to 10 in the National Assembly.
As this is not enough, UDF President Atupele Muluzi lost a Parliamentary seat in his constituency to new-comer in the political scene.
The last hope for Muluzi was a ministerial post from President Mutharika but this has also not worked out for him.
The development has also raised speculations that the two parties will not continue working together in the National Assembly.
When asked to comment on the matter, DPP Spokesperson Nicholas Dausi refused to comment on the matter, saying its an in house issue.
While UDF Spokesperson Ken Ndanga was quoted in one of the daily papers saying the Party will soon call for meeting to review their marriage with the ruling DPP.
Meanwhile Atupele is yet to comment on the matter.
