NPL Rescues St. Peters Hospital in Likoma

Women and children on Likoma Island are expected to see an improved health service delivery at the islands St. Peters Hospital courtesy of a donation of various machines for the maternity and labour wards at the facility by the Nation Publications Limited (NPL) through its health resource mobilization campaign, Mothers Fun Run (MFR).

NPL has donated two Resuscitators and one Suction machines to the health facility on Saturday amounting to 2.3 million kwacha.

The machines are used to support infants and premature babies with breathing difficulties as well as mothers in labor.

MFR Program Coordinator Albert Banda said the donation is aimed at improving the provision of quality primary health care services at the Islands hospital.

According to Banda, referral cases are a big challenge due to transport challenges at the Island.

Some of the equipment purchased was not available on the initial handover of the purchased medical equipment, a ceremony that took place at St Peters hospital in Likoma Island.

Banda said another consignment is expected to arrive at the Island next week.

Upon receiving the equipment at the hospital District Medical Officer (DMO) Mathias Londo, said the items will help to reduce financial constraints to meet referral requirement to the mainland hospitals.

Nation Publications Limited through its safe motherhood initiative the Mother’s Fun Run mobilizes financial support for the purchase of medical equipment and services essential for safe delivery and care of mothers, girls and children during child birth.

In November 2019, NPLs health resource mobilization campaign, Mother’s Fun Run (MFR) targeted Likoma and Ntcheu districts.-ZBS
