Man arrested for assaulting ex-wife in Nkhotakota

Police in Nkhotakota have arrested a man identified as Hassain Alifu Magaya for ruthlessly assaulting a woman with whom he just separated.

Police say Magaya heavily assaulted the woman (name withheld) before he dumped her in a nearby bush on presumption that she had died.

It is said Magaya met the woman as she was coming from the market before he pounced on her and beat her up.

She later sustained deep cuts and looked unconscious before Magaya decided to dump her around a nearby bush.

The helpless woman was later found by some children who were hunting around the areas.

She was then rushed to Nkhotakota District Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment having lost a lot of blood.

Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson Williams Kaponda, says the suspect will appear in soon to answer attempted murder charges.

Magaya 30, hails from Mankhwazi village in the area of senior chief Mwadzama in Nkhotakota District.

The incident comes amid growing calls for an end of gender based violence in the country.

Although, some experts argued there is need for courts to issue stiffer punishments, others are also proposing a total mindset change across societies.
