SKC Says Reforms Aim At Creating Better Malawi

Public sector reforms are there to “create a better Malawi,” Malawi’s Vice President said on Monday at the signing ceremony of public sector reforms performance contracts.

Chilima, who is also the Minister responsible for Economic Planning and Public Sector Reforms, said the contracts reflected “renewed impetus” to provide efficient services and being accountable to Malawians.

He said the reforms cover legislative and policy, constitutional, financial sustainability, infrastructure development and management and administrative reforms.

On agriculture, he said the reforms will see the introduction of a fertilizer company “which will help the country move forward.”

Malawi spends over K160 billion to import fertilizer for millions of citizens.

The VP said reforms at grain marketer ADMARC will aim to see the company stifled by huge debts to fibancially sustain itself.

In the energy sector, Chilima said the reforms seek a turnaround strategy for ESCOM ” to become financially health.”

Power generator EGENCO will need to double its output from 370 megawatts in the next two years, the VP said.

“We believe with improved power supply, it’s an important catalyst for mining,” he added.
