Traffic Officer Ephrone Simwaka demoted for detaining Chimwendo Banda’s friend vehicle

Sub Inspector Ephrone Simwaka who was working as a traffic officer at Domasi in Zomba has been transferred to Makanjira Police Unit in Mangochi for detaining a vehicle belonging to unknown Member of Parliament in Lilongwe.

The MP is suspected to be a friend of former Minister of homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda who is now serving as Minister of Sports.

The Police officer has since reverted to general duties.

Simwaka has confirmed of the development in a statement made available to faceofmalawi.

“I wish to inform you that I have been transferred to Makanjira police post and reverted to General Duties. The reason for this punishment is that on Sunday 17th April, 2022 I was on duty at Domasi Road Block from 0600 hours to 1800 hours. And in the morning hours came a D4D motor vehicle without number plates.

“I asked the driver to produce his driving license of which he failed to produce it. I asked him to produce the Certificate of Fitness coz the one on his motor vehicle expired in March, 2022, he failed again to produce it. And a certificate of insurance failed again to produce,” said Simwaka.

Added Simwaka: “Then I told him to a fine for three traffic offenses and a general receipt will be issued by a cashier.
“Since he blocked the road way I told him to park his motor vehicle at the road so that he should pave way to other road users of which he was not happy.

“Then he told me that he is going to call the IG of police of which I said go ahead. Instead of calling our boss Inspector General, he called Honorable Chimwendo Banda about the same. He gave me his phone to talk to Honorable Minister of which I did talked to him and explained to him what has transpired at the road block.

“Honorable Chimwendo Banda told me that ameneyo ndi Member of Parliament wathu mu Lilongwe muno muthandizeni. Then I said okay Sir I will assist him. He asked my name and I said I am Traffic Sub Inspector Simwaka at Domasi police post. He said dzikomo kwambiri and he cut the phone call.”

“After phone conversations with the Honorable minister, I told the Honorable Member whom he did not introduce himself to me in the first place that it’s okay Sir you may go, he asked my name too and gave him my name as well.

“He left the place, but he was not happy.

“Atafika ku Area 30 ko anakamba mabodza kuti sindinawayankhule bwino. Basitu IG action against me without asking me what had happened.”
