Councillor Chimbanga accuses Nankhumwa of holding DPP at ransom

Councillor for Blantyre Soche East Leonard Chimbanga has accused estranged Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa of holding the party at ransom.

Chimbanga’s accusations follow a court decision to adjourn to July 18, 2022 a case where 22 Members of Parliament are challenging the appointment of Dr. George Chaponda as leader of opposition in Parliament.

The MPs led by Welani Chilenga claim that the appointment of Chaponda did not follow due processes as they were not invited to take part.

Writing on his official facebook page Chimbanga claimed that the stand taken by Chaponda to cling to leader of opposition is working to the advantage of the Tonse Alliance of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

“In a functioning democracy, you have a strong opposition providing checks and balances. This is good for any country. Sadly, the corrupt Chakwera regime is running without being checked. The people of this country are getting a raw deal. With the help of the judiciary Kondwani Nankhumwa is holding the DPP at ransom weakening the opposition to give an advantage to this government.

“The Chief Justice ought to look into this matter. Malawians deserve a strong leader of the opposition. The courts must not deny them that right. How can the Judge adjourn the case to the 18th of July just that? Then they will keep dragging it. This is wrong on many fronts. We have people who do not love their country in very critical positions,” he wrote.

He added: “We are our own enemies.”

Meanwhile, Nankhumwa is yet to comment on the matter.
