Man found dead on Lake Malawi

A man identified as Joseph Mwase was on Monday found dead on Lake Malawi at Nkhata Bay Boma.

Confirming the death to Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Tuesday, spokesperson for Nkhata Bay Police, Kondwani James, said upon getting information about a dead body on the lake on Monday evening, police rushed to the scene.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the deceased jumped into the lake to seek refuge as he was being chased on suspicion that he snatched a laptop bag from a woman at Nkhata Bay Port.

Meanwhile, police are calling for those whose relative is missing to report to police or visit Nkhata Bay District Hospital for body identification.

Postmortem conducted at Nkhata Bay District Hospital where the body is being kept, indicate death was due to suffocation.

The deceased, 38, comes from Traditional Authority (TA) Mkumbira in the district.
