New DPP Masauko Chamkakala urged to support ACB in Fight Against Graft

The recently appointed Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Masauko Chamkakala, is facing calls to support the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in its efforts to combat corruption.

Chamkakala’s predecessor, Steven Kayuni, was criticized for hindering the bureau’s operations by denying consent to prosecute several cases.

In January of last year, Kayuni refused to grant the ACB consent to prosecute a businessman’s agent and four other accomplices on charges of corruption, citing a lack of a complete report on the case.

This led to President Lazarus Chakwera intervening and appointing an intermediary between the ACB, the DPP, and the Attorney General, to be mediated by the Justice Minister, Titus Mvalo.

Michael Kaiyatsa, the interim vice chairman of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, believes that Chamkakala will be fully supportive in the fight against corruption.

Chamkakala was not available for comment on the situation.
