Three people have been fined K250,000 each by the Zomba Senior Resident Magistrate court for assaulting a court-martial whilst on official duties.
The court heard that Alfred Aufi Assan and two others committed the offence on April 21, 2023 where they assaulted Dennis Banda, a court martial under Blantyre Magistrate Court as he was assigned to deliver a court summon to Magret Chikaluma who is wife to Alfred Aufi Assan.
The three alleged Banda to be a fraudster and assaulted him, leaving him with torn clothes, multiple bruises and was bleeding through the nose.
The matter was reported to police leading to the arrest of the accused persons.
Appearing before court, the three pleaded not guilty to a charge levelled against them. This prompted the state to parade three witnesses leading to their conviction.
Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Yohane Munthali concurred with the state’s submissions and ordered the accused persons to pay a fine of K250,000.00 each or in default serve 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
