MRA launches extended excise tax stamps regime

By Mayamiko Phiri.

The Malawi revenue authority ( MRA) has launched an extended excise tax stamps regime with the sole purpose of bolstering the tracking and tracing of excise tax payments.

MRA deputy commissioner general, Henry Ngutwa said this during a media briefing in Blantyre on Friday, 10th May.

“The stamps target products such as water, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products and carbonated drinks and will help in dealing with smuggling, illicit trade and further more it will protect the local manufacturers. “said Ngutwa.

He also stated that as MRA they have a mandate to protect the society from consuming hazardous products.

Of which the stamps will massively assist as people will be assured of products that are legitimate on the market.

The deputy commissioner general hinted that MRA does not expect, manufacturers to increase the prices of commodities because of tax stamps which the highest is MK32, while the lowest is at 12 kwacha.

The excise tax stamps regime was gazetted in January 2024 and has now been fully implemented as of May 1st, 2024.
