More than 100 people have reportedly been arrested in Bloemfontein, South Africa after a planned shutdown escalated into violence and looting targeting foreign-owned shops earlier today.

Reports indicate that community members in the Rocklands area allegedly looted a local bottle store, forcing police to deploy heavily to prevent further disturbances.

Police also arrested around 50 suspects overnight for allegedly attacking and looting foreign-owned spaza shops in Phases 6 and 10.

Security officers remain on high alert guarding affected businesses and infrastructure as tensions continue in parts of the township.

Authorities have urged residents not to participate in violence, looting, or destruction of property, warning that more arrests could follow.
