Howard Pemba has ruled that controversial lawyer and corruption whistleblower Alexious Kamangila is liable to pay damages to fellow High Court Judge Kenan Manda in a defamation case dating back to October 2024.
The ruling follows an application filed by Manda’s lawyer, Michael Goba Chipeta, accusing Kamangila of failing to comply with court directions issued during a scheduling conference held on March 5, 2025.
Judge Pemba found Kamangila in default after he allegedly failed to file witness statements and skeleton arguments within the required 21 days.
The court has since ordered that damages, including compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages, be assessed by the Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal.
Pemba also ordered Kamangila to stop publishing defamatory statements against Judge Manda and to remove all related publications within 24 hours of receiving the order.
However, Kamangila has said he disagrees with the ruling.
Judge Manda’s original demand letter sought K250 million in damages, a public apology, and an end to further defamatory statements allegedly made against him.
