A 30-year-old man, Eddison Katawo, has today tragically drowned in Lake Malawi at Monkey Bay, in Mangochi District.

Monkey Bay police Spokesperson Alice Sichali has confirmed the incident and said it has occurred today on January 21, 2025, when Katawo, a resident of Sumbi Village under Traditional Authority Nankumba, went to the lake in the morning. He worked as a security guard at the Goshen City company, owned by prominent preacher  Prophet Shepherd Bushiri.

Sichali reported that Katawo, after getting into a boat near the lake’s shore, tragically lost control when the boat capsized. A search was conducted, and his body was later found. He was rushed to the Monkey Bay Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had already passed away due to drowning.

The community and authorities have expressed their condolences, and investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.
