Police at Chiweta in Rumphi have arrested three men and a 19 year old boy for allegedly committing various offences including theft between Jalawe and Bale area along Mzuzu-Karonga M1 road.

Confirming the arrest, District Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Noel Kamchenga says the suspects were arrested in the wee hours of January 19, 2025.

According to Kamchenga, the suspects were arrested following an intelligence driven raid and ambush by police in the area following complaints from motorists operating between Jalawe and Bale and other road users.

Police have also recovered some items such as clothes believed to have been stolen from motorists and buckets of tomatoes stolen from moving vehicles.

The suspects have been identified as Fwasani Mughogho 37, Ledson Chisale 19, McHis Jabess Mkandawire 22, and Lusungu Pundupundu Mkandawire 40, all from the area of Traditional Authority Mwalweni in the district.

Three general workers and two security guards at China Henan International Cooperation Group Ltd. (CHICO), have been arrested by police at Chinyolo in Rumphi for allegedly conniving and stealing 280 litres of diesel worth K765, 520.00.

District Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Noel Kamchenga says the suspects were arrested at Mkombezi, (Msambanyama area), in the wee hours of January 20, 2024 after tip off from well wishers.

Kamchenga says they have also recovered cash amounting to K144,000.00 from the suspects.The suspects will soon appear before court to answer charges of theft by servant.

China Henan International Cooperation Group Ltd. (CHICO), is a contractor responsible for the rehabilitation and widening of the M1 road lot 4 from Kacheche in Mzimba to Chiweta in Rumphi.

The suspects have been identified as Tionge Nyirenda, 28, Fiskani Chawinga, 25, Ganizani Gondwe, 28, John Mbewe, 50 and Tonic Vinkhumbo, 21.
