A 14-year-old Standard 5 learner at Kamuzu Palace Primary School in Lilongwe, Pemphero Rajab has lost his life after being electrocuted by an ESCOM wire at the Area 44 Landscape Football Ground.
Pemphero was retrieving a ball stuck between an ESCOM pole and an anchored wire when the accident happened. He was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kawale Police and ESCOM officials investigated the scene, and a postmortem confirmed electrocution as the cause of death. Authorities have urged the public to treat all ESCOM wires as live to prevent similar tragedies.
