United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Malawi has shut down its website after the U.S. government put most of its staff on leave starting February 7, 2025.
This move is part of a global change under President Donald Trump’s new order, affecting development programs, including in Malawi.
USAID is also planning to bring staff back home in 30 days and end non-essential contracts, except for medical, family, or safety reasons.
The situation has left ongoing projects and people depending on aid uncertain about the future.
However, officials say there’s no need to worry about major disruptions. USAID has been helping Malawi since 1979, supporting agriculture, health, and education.
Still, long-term uncertainty could affect important projects.
