Police in Mzuzu have arrested prominent social media influencer Julius Mithi on suspicion of spreading false information regarding voter registers.
National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed the arrest, stating that Mithi is suspected of falsely claiming that over 1,152,000 people had been removed from the electoral register. Authorities allege that he committed the offense on March 19 when he posted the information on his website.
Mithi, a Senior Accounts Assistant at the Regional Irrigation and Water Development Office in the Northern Region, has been at the center of controversy in the past. He was recently interdicted by the Accountant General over a Facebook post and has been involved in exposing corruption, including the alleged “Sex for Grades Scandal” at Livingstonia University.
He is currently being held at Mzuzu Police Station and is expected to appear in court within 48 hours. Police have yet to provide further details on the case.
