Some human rights organisations in Mzimba are demanding the arrest of Gonthani Nyirenda of Thomas Chipimbi Village under Senior Chief M’mbelwa over alleged child abuse.

The calls follow a video circulating on social media showing Nyirenda allegedly tying a child to a tree upside down  with legs raised and head facing down  after accusing the child of stealing maize.

Commenting on the matter, Mzimba Institute for Development Communications Trust (MIDCT) executive director Christopher Melele described the act as abuse and said the law must take its course.

“We have seen the images and we are deeply concerned by what Nyirenda did to the child. We are asking police to do their job on this matter,” said Melele.

Meanwhile, Moses Nkhana, who heads the Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO), has also condemned the incident.

Police in Mzimba had not yet commented on the demands from the organisations at the time of reporting.
