The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has assured stakeholders that the resignation of Commissioner Francis Kasaila has not compromised the commission’s legal credibility.
MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja made this remark during a National Election Consultative Forum (NECOF) which was held in Lilongwe, she emphasized that the current number of commissioners remains within the legal framework, and MEC has already notified the appropriate authorities regarding the vacancy.
Addressing the progress of the electoral process ahead of the 16 September 2025 elections, Mtalimanja revealed that MEC has registered 7,202,756 voters nationwide. This figure is still below the projected total of 10,957,490.
She also noted that the voter transfer process was largely successful, with 15 out of 19 individuals whose names had gone missing during the official transfer period being located and recorded. The remaining four did not appear on the designated transfer day announced by MEC.
