A Toyota Hiace minibus carrying 15 passengers veered off the road and overturned at Chikangawa trading center yesterday afternoon, leaving one person dead and 12 others injured.

Mzimba Police Station spokesperson Maria Banda confirmed the accident occurred around 3:30 pm when the driver lost control of the vehicle (Registration number CA 9250) traveling from Lilongwe.

“The driver died on the spot while 12 passengers sustained various injuries and were rushed to hospital,” Banda said. “Contrary to social media reports, we can confirm only one death in this accident.”

All injured passengers have since been treated and discharged from hospital, according to police records.

Banda expressed concern over exaggerated reports circulating on social media platforms, warning the public against spreading unverified information.

“We urge Malawians to always verify such information with authorities before sharing,” she said. “Spreading false information only causes unnecessary panic among families and the general public.”

Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest speeding may have been a factor, though mechanical faults haven’t been ruled out.

The accident comes as police intensify road safety campaigns ahead of the festive season. Authorities have promised to increase traffic patrols along the Chikangawa route.
