2 Arrested For Illegal Possession of 7 Elephant Tusks in Lilongwe

Police in Lilongwe have yesterday on Monday 19 May 2025, arrested two individuals for illegal possession of Elephant tusks (raw ivory).
Deputy spokesperson for Lilongwe police, sergeant Khumbo Sanyiwa, has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspects as Gift Phiri aged 45 and Florina Lackson, 41.
According to Sanyiwa, the two were arrested at Likuni ground in the city following a tip-off police received, that the duo were offering the species for sale.
“After a follow-up, a team of detectives intercepted the suspects at Likuni football ground. Upon searching them, it is when they were found with the seven pieces of ivory in a bag”, said Sanyiwa.
The suspects are now in police custody and they will soon appear in court soon charges leveled against them.
Gift Phiri hails from Wanyala Village, Traditional Authority (T/A), Santhe, Kasungu, while Florina Lackson hails from Chala Village, T/A Malili in Lilongwe District.
