Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor MacDonald Mafuta Mwale has confirmed that an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation will arrive in the country tomorrow for discussions with local authorities.
The visit follows the expiration of Malawi’s four-year $175 million Extended Credit Facility (ECF), which lapsed after 18 months without review.
Speaking on the sidelines of the PAC Sixth All-Inclusive Stakeholders Conference in Blantyre, Mafuta Mwale said the meetings will focus on reviewing the past ECF rather than launching a new programme.
“We are going to do an analysis of challenges and successes of the past ECF,” he said.
The governor noted that the IMF visit had been planned during Malawi’s participation in the IMF-World Bank spring meetings in Washington DC.
He emphasized that while inflation is slowing, its effects are still being felt by Malawians.
Secretary to the Treasury Betchani Tchereni said the IMF team will visit Chikwawa District to understand challenges on the ground.
