Deputy Minister ‘Joyce Chitsulo’ Dies Weeks After Surviving Road Accident

Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Joyce Chitsulo has died.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has confirmed the sad news to Nation Newspaper.

Chitsulo, who was also the Member of Parliament for Mwanza West under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), reportedly collapsed this morning and was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

This tragic development follows her recent involvement in a road traffic accident on May 16, 2025, near Elephant Rock, around 11 PM in Mzuzu. In the accident, she had sustained a fracture to her leg and was still recovering at the time of her death.

Before serving in her ministerial role, Chitsulo was well known for her leadership as Chairperson of the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) in Parliament. She was admired for her work ethic, leadership, and dedication to public service.

News of her passing has sent shockwaves throughout Malawi, with tributes expected from across the political spectrum and civil society.
