The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has supported Blantyre Youth Office in a campaign to stop drug and alcohol abuse, early sex and child marriages among young people in Blantyre.

This follows the concerns from the Blantyre Youth Office that these behaviors are causing school drop out among many students and also endangering their health wise.

During the campaign in Bangwe Township, District Youth Officer Martha Chilewani, said the situation needs quick action to protect young people and keep them in school.

‘We see many young people loosing their ways, this is a warning and we need to help these young youths so that they can became good citizens,’ said Chilewani.

The campaign brought together officials from different ministries including Education, Health, Social Welfare and the Malawi police service as they held roadshows to raise awareness about the problems affecting young people.

Almost 80 young people have been trained as youth coaches to educate their peers in schools and communities.

More campaigns like this will also happen in Ndirande, Chilomoni, and Zingwangwa Townships.
