Malawi’s music and creative industries will come together later this month to honor the life and legacy of Kennedy “Spyral” Mwenya, the late hip-hop artist and award-winning graphic designer who passed away  in road tragic road accident in June 2024.

The Spyral Mwenya Memorial Show, organized by Loud Fest Music, is scheduled for Saturday, 28 June 2025 at MoneyMen Club in Blantyre, under the theme “Legends Never Die.”

Spyral, born on June 13, 1995, in Chikulamayembe Village, Rumphi, rose to prominence as a multi-talented force in Malawi’s urban culture scene. A graduate in Computer Science, he first gained public attention in 2016 as one half of the music duo Proud and quickly became a household name in the southern music circuit.

Beyond his lyrical talent, Spyral was revered for his visual artistry. As a graphic designer with FD Communications, he was responsible for some of the most recognizable album artwork and promotional visuals in Malawian entertainment. His excellence in the field earned him the Creative Artist of the Year title at the Institute of Marketers Malawi (IMM) Awards.

His music journey was marked by genre-defying releases that included Walahi (2015), Levels, RIFA, Swift, and Who. His 2021 LP, High Hopes, particularly the hit single Ndimaganiza Bho, became an anthem for many young Malawians. He continued to evolve sonically, embracing afrobeat and amapiano influences in later releases such as Wine It (2022) and Kuche Kuche 2 (2023).

Tragically, Spyral lost his life in a car accident near Mzuzu while returning from a family funeral in Rumphi on June 25, 2024. His death was confirmed by fellow artist and friend Tsar Leo, and was met with shock and sadness across the industry.

“His creativity and passion were truly inspiring… a profound loss to his family, music family, fans, and everyone who knew him,” said Vita Chirwa, President of the Musicians’ Union of Malawi (MUM).

“He was talented and full of vibe… I have known him since 2007,” added veteran artist Phyzix.
