Government of Malawi through the Minister of Gender has today hosted the Continental Day of the African Child commemoration in Lilongwe, to advocate for strong support of children rights.
The event began with solidarity march from Parliament Building to the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) where the main activities were held.
The Vice President Dr. Michael Usi was presiding over the event, held under the theme ‘ Education for All Children in Africa, The Time is Now.
Speaking on the event, Save the Children Country Director, Bhekimpilo Khanye, said Malawi has made progress in supporting children since 2010, including removing school fees and improving laws.
Khanye also stressed out that many child programmes still don’t get enough funding and depend too much on short term donor help. He said there is also lack of enough data about children’s need and welfare.
The event brought together African Union representatives, child delegates, development partners and government officials, all calling for better planning and budgeting to improve the lives of children across the continent.
