Chaos erupted in Chisiyo, Lilongwe District, after angry residents vandalised the newly-constructed Chisiyo Police Unit and torched two vehicles impounded by traffic police.
According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the violence followed the discovery of two dead bodies on Saturday believed to be a Kabaza (motorcycle taxi) operator and a passenger.
Chigalu said the community initially handed over a suspect to police, but tensions flared when a mob, mostly comprised of Kabaza operators, returned demanding the suspect be released into their custody.
“By then, the suspect had already been transferred to Lilongwe Police Station for safety and further investigation. That’s when the mob turned violent and began destroying property at the police unit,” said Chigalu.
Two vehicles that had been impounded by traffic police were also set on fire during the rampage.
Police say no arrests have been made so far, but investigations are ongoing.
