Police in Zomba are searching for a woman suspected of dumping her baby in a pit latrine at Matawale yesterday afternoon.
Zomba Police spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano, the unidentified woman had a baby with her when she checked into a guest house in the Chinamwali area around 4 PM.
However, around 8 PM, she reportedly left the premises without the child, claiming she was going to meet her mother who would be returning to the same location.
Shortly after her departure, caretakers at the guest house heard the sound of a baby crying coming from the pit latrine. They immediately alerted the police, who, with the help of community members, managed to dig up the latrine and rescue the infant.
The baby was rushed to Matawale Health Centre and later referred to Zomba Central Hospital for further medical attention.
Police are currently investigating the matter and have launched a manhunt for the woman involved.
