Teen Dies After Being Run Over by Train in Balaka

A 19-year-old man has died after being run over by a locomotive train at Mululu Railway Line in Balaka District.
Balaka Police Public Relations Officer, Gladson M’bumpha, has identified the deceased as Blessings Mkwanda.
According to M’bumpha, the tragic incident occurred on July 4, 2025. “Police report indicates that Mkwanda left his home for mice hunting with his friends, Tito and Chifuniro. Whilst there, they started teasing each other and because of this, Mkwanda left his friends and went home, but instead of going home, he sat down on the railway line. Over a sudden, a locomotive train ran over him and died on the spot,” said M’bumpha.
Police have since urged members of the public to avoid playing or sitting near railway tracks to prevent similar accidents.
Blessings Mkwanda came from Nailuwa Village, in the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala, Balaka District.
