Malawi is today marking 61 years of independence with vibrant national celebrations currently underway at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. President Lazarus Chakwera is presiding over the commemorative event, joined by Botswana’s President Duma Boko, who arrived in the country yesterday as the official guest of honour.
Crowds began gathering at the 40,000-seater venue from the early hours, with many dressed in the iconic red, green, and black colours of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The stadium is now teeming with energy as thousands of citizens take part in the patriotic festivities.
This year’s anniversary is being held under the banner: “Restoring Broken Foundations, Taking Malawi Forward.” The theme highlights the nation’s resolve to rebuild amid ongoing economic hardships, including fuel and foreign exchange shortages, rising food insecurity, and inflation that continues to strain household budgets.
Despite these challenges, the mood at the stadium is upbeat, with a sense of national unity and renewed hope in the air.
The event’s programme features a range of activities including a military parade, cultural performances, live music acts, and a friendly football match between Malawi’s Flames and Botswana’s Zebras—adding a spirit of continental friendship to the day’s celebrations.
