Police in Dowa District are searching for Rodwell Nduna, who is accused of murdering his uncle following allegations of witchcraft.
According to Alice Sitima, publicist for Dowa Police Station, the incident occurred on Monday this week at Chikonkha Village under Traditional Authority Mkukula.
Sitima said prior to the incident, family elders had convened a meeting to address ongoing witchcraft accusations, but disagreements persisted among some members.
On the day of the incident, Nduna allegedly confronted his uncle, Positani Kachipewa, at his home, questioning him over the accusations before striking him with a hammer and fleeing the scene.
The victim was rushed to Dowa District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was severe head trauma.
Meanwhile, Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (MANEPO) has condemned the killing. Executive Director Andrew Kavala described the incident as a serious violation of human rights.
“Accusations of witchcraft are not only baseless, but they are also a serious violation of human rights and dignity,” said Kavala.
He has since called for increased public awareness and enforcement of the Older Persons Act to ensure communities understand the rights of older persons and the legal consequences of abuse.
Police say a manhunt for the suspect is currently underway.
