The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has said it does not agree with views suggesting that party leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera should resign if the party is to return to government in 2030.

This comes after a spokesperson, Austin Liyabunya, claimed that God had told him that Dr Chakwera should step down as MCP leader and instead nominate Vitumbiko Mumba if the party hopes to win the 2030 elections.

In response, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira dismissed the remarks, saying Liyabunya is neither a politician nor a member of the party and should stop interfering in political matters.

Kabwira further said the MCP is not a religious organisation and therefore does not respond to such claims, but rather to the views of its official leadership and structures across the regions.

He added that the party remains behind Dr Chakwera until members make formal decisions at the general assembly in line with the party’s constitution.

In a Facebook post, Liyabunya warned that if Dr Chakwera resigns and appoints Mumba as his successor, the party could face difficulties in preparing for the 2030 elections.
