Man Gets 14 Years for Defiling and Impregnating 15 Year-old Girl in Lilongwe

The First Grade Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has convicted and sentenced Wedson Kaunda, 22, to one year imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with, and impregnating a 15-year-old girl.
The court heard from State Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Richard Kandeya of Lilongwe Police that Kaunda committed the offence between the months of September, 2025 and March 2026.
According to deputy public relations officer for Lilongwe police, Sergeant Khumbo Sanyiwa, Kandeya further said that despite knowing that the victim was a minor, Kaunda (convict) kept on taking the victim to a certain rest house in the village for several times where he had sexual intercourse with her.
It was in March this year when the victim’s parents, after discovering that the girl was carrying a three months old pregnancy, and that the convict was responsible, reported the matter to police.
Appearing in court, Kaunda pleaded guilty to the charge of Having Sexual Intercourse with a Female Child.
In mitigation, he asked for leniency to the court saying he is a first time offender
In his submission, Prosecutor Kandeya asked the court to use its jurisdiction powers to slap Kaunda with a 14-year custodial sentence citing the seriousness of the offence.
Before passing his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Arthur Mtalimanja, concurred with the State that the offence Kaunda committed is serious in nature.
However, Magistrate Mtalimanja said that his sentence had taken into consideration the mitigating factor that the convict was a first time offender, and that the seven-year age gap between the convict and the victim was not a concerning margin.
The Magistrate further said that the victim shall greatly need the convict (Kaunda) for child support of the baby as a father, as such, the court decided to sentence Kaunda to a one year imprisonment with hard labor effective the day of his arrest in March.
