Malawi Airlines has increased its base fares by 33 percent following a surge in fuel prices, a move that is expected to impact travellers across the country.
The airline’s Public Relations Officer Joseph Chikalipo confirmed that a return ticket between Lilongwe and Blantyre has risen from K240,000 to K350,000.
Chikalipo attributed the adjustment to rising Jet A-1 fuel costs, which have increased by about 81 percent at Kamuzu International Airport and 79 percent at Chileka International Airport. He said the decision is aimed at ensuring operational sustainability while maintaining reliable service.
The development comes just days after a social media post by Zione Themba sparked public debate on access to air travel.
In the viral Facebook post, Themba suggested that airline fares should be increased to limit access for low-income earners, claiming she was uncomfortable sharing a flight with what she described as “poor people.”
Her remarks were widely condemned by Malawians online, who accused her of being insensitive and discriminatory, with many emphasizing that air travel should remain accessible regardless of economic status.
While the airline has clarified that the fare increase is driven solely by fuel costs and not social considerations, the timing has reignited conversations around affordability, inclusivity, and class perceptions in Malawi’s aviation sector.
