The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has strongly condemned Isaac Jomo Osman, Mayor of Blantyre, over an incident in which he is alleged to have physically and verbally assaulted a woman and others in a video broadcast live on his Facebook page.
In a statement, MHRC described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and human dignity. The woman involved was reportedly accused of buying stolen goods during the confrontation, which also included several men accompanying the Mayor.
MHRC Chairperson Chikondi Chijozi expressed concern that a public official took the law into his own hands, stressing that such actions undermine the rule of law. The Commission also noted that underage individuals were seen witnessing the violence, calling it harmful to children.
The Commission has since called on law enforcement authorities to urgently investigate the matter and ensure that Osman is held accountable. It further urged all leaders to uphold the dignity and safety of citizens, particularly women and children.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked mixed reactions among the public. While many have condemned the Mayor’s actions, others have defended him, arguing that suspected criminals sometimes “deserve punishment.” However, rights groups warn that taking justice into one’s own hands sets a dangerous precedent and erodes legal protections for all citizens.
