A civil society organisation, Citizens for Justice and Equity, has announced plans to hold peaceful demonstrations in Lilongwe on Wednesday, 7 May, in protest against Jomo Osman following allegations of assault.
The planned demonstrations come after a video widely shared on social media allegedly showed Osman assaulting a woman suspected of possessing stolen items. The footage has sparked public outrage and renewed debate over accountability among public officials.
In a formal notice submitted to Lingadzi Police Station, the organisation confirmed the protest plans. The document was signed by the group’s leader Agape Khombe and Operations Director Billy Malata.
According to the notice, the demonstrations will begin at the Lilongwe City Council offices at 9:00 a.m. Protesters are expected to march to the United States Embassy in Malawi, before proceeding to the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare.
Both the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Gender have condemned the incident, stressing that public officials must uphold the law and respect human dignity in the execution of their duties.
Osman has since issued a public apology, acknowledging that his conduct fell short of expected standards. He also expressed willingness to cooperate fully with ongoing investigations into the matter.
Authorities have yet to announce whether any formal charges will be brought, as investigations continue.
