The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has formally called on the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to provide an update on the high-profile K16.5 billion Mapeto tax evasion case.

In a letter dated May 4, 2026, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said the public has a right to know the current status of the case, describing the amount involved as substantial and of national interest.

The case dates back to May 2021, when the Malawi Revenue Authority arrested five executives from Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons Limited over allegations of tax evasion. The amount in question was initially estimated at K10.8 billion but was later revised upwards to K16.5 billion.

Namiwa has since invoked the Access to Information Act, giving the revenue authority a 14-day ultimatum to provide an update or face further action.

He said the move is in line with CDEDI’s mandate to promote transparency, accountability, and access to information on matters affecting the public.
