Police in Lilongwe have arrested three suspects believed to be part of a criminal group targeting motorcycle taxi operators across several areas of the city.
According to Lilongwe Deputy Police Spokesperson Khumbo Sanyiwa, the suspects have been identified as John Chambwe (36), Hoseya Jere (33), and Madalitso Kabambe (25).
Sanyiwa said investigations indicate that the trio had been operating in multiple locations, including Area 1 Falls, Area 4, Area 6, and Area 3. The suspects allegedly posed as passengers, hiring motorcycle taxi operators before attacking them mid-journey.
“They would pretend to be customers, then during the trip they would stab and injure the drivers before stealing their motorcycles,” Sanyiwa explained.
Police reports indicate that at the time of arrest, Kabambe was found in possession of a motorcycle believed to have been stolen in Kasungu. Meanwhile, Jere was reportedly found with a rope suspected to have been used in restraining or assaulting victims.
The arrests follow growing concern over attacks targeting motorcycle taxi operators, a key mode of transport for many residents in Lilongwe.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to robbery and assault.
