The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called on Malawi Police Service to reopen investigations and take urgent steps to apprehend a murder suspect, Ali Kaka Chinemba, who reportedly fled the country in 2015.

HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa emphasized that the right to life must be upheld, urging authorities to ensure that Chinemba is brought before the courts. He noted that despite the passage of 11 years, justice must still be served.

“Police need to act decisively. The passage of time should not be an excuse for inaction when it comes to serious crimes such as murder,” said Kaiyatsa.

The renewed calls follow the circulation of a video clip allegedly showing Chinemba in South Africa. In the footage, the suspect is reportedly seen defending himself during what appears to be a xenophobic attack, sparking fresh public interest in the long-standing case.

Security expert Aubrey Kabisala has described the process of apprehending a fugitive outside Malawi as complex. He explained that such efforts typically require coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies or international bodies such as Interpol.

“Cross-border arrests involve legal and diplomatic procedures. Authorities would need to engage their counterparts in South Africa or work through international policing systems,” said Kabisala.

The Malawi Police Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter. Meanwhile, HRDC maintains that swift action is necessary to reinforce public trust in the justice system and demonstrate commitment to human rights.

The case continues to draw attention as calls grow louder for accountability and closure for those affected.
