Shepherd Bushiri has accepted a public apology from Peter Sambo following weeks of tension over defamatory social media posts directed at the prophet, his family and ministry.

In a statement released on May 12, Bushiri said he had carefully considered Sambo’s apology and acknowledged the remorse and humility expressed in it.

“As a believer, I have completely forgiven him,” Bushiri said.

The prophet said Sambo had admitted that his actions were influenced by anger and misinformation and had agreed to remove all related publications and stop posting about him.

Sambo issued the apology on May 8 through a Facebook post in which he apologised for the stress caused to Bushiri and his family and described his actions as a mistake made out of anger and misinformation.

The apology and acceptance come weeks after Bushiri announced on April 16 that he had instructed lawyers in the United Kingdom to commence legal proceedings against Sambo over alleged defamatory statements.

At the time, Bushiri warned that the matter had moved beyond social media and into a legal process, claiming Sambo could face damages of up to £50,000 under UK law.

In his latest statement, Bushiri also warned Malawians against misinformation and reckless use of social media, saying false accusations and propaganda can destroy lives, reputations and communities.
