A 32-year-old man, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour by the First Grade Magistrate Court in Nkhata Bay District after being found guilty of sexually abusing his 7-year-old stepdaughter.
This follows evidence that Phiri had repeatedly forced himself on the child and attempted to silence her with threats and money.
According to state prosecutor Andrew Singini, the abuse came to light when the victim’s mother discovered suspicious stains on the girl’s underwear while washing.
Upon questioning, the girl revealed that her stepfather had assaulted her several times and warned her not to disclose the ordeal.
In delivering judgment, Magistrate Radison Gamaliyele agreed with the prosecution that the conduct was reprehensible and warranted a strong penalty.
Despite his plea for leniency on grounds of being a family breadwinner, the court ruled that such behavior was intolerable.
