A 51-year-old man, Martin Mshani, from Yamba Village under Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa District, has drowned in the Yamba River.

Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Mathews Mfune, said Mshani left home on Sunday for a drinking spree at Nakachenja before proceeding to Katutula Trading Centre.

According to police, he never returned home, prompting relatives and community members to organize a search operation.

His body was later discovered floating in the Yamba River on Tuesday.

A postmortem conducted at Chitipa District Hospital revealed that the cause of death was suffocation due to drowning.

Police have since cautioned members of the public against crossing rivers or moving near water bodies while under the influence of alcohol.
