It appears soldiers have started withdrawing from Msundwe in Lilongwe District after maintaining a heavy security presence in the area for the past two days.
A visit to the area by Times 360 Malawi journalists, reveals that during the night found one entertainment place reopened alongside three shops that had resumed business.
Some residents and business operators said trading activities slowly resumed yesterday afternoon after operations by the Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Service intensified in the area.
The residents described the past two days as tense, saying many people feared moving around because soldiers and police officers were heavily deployed throughout the township.
They also confirmed reports that one of the suspects currently in police custody was allegedly found with drums of ethanol believed to have been used in the production of the illicit liquor commonly known as “Nkalabongo.”
Some residents compared the situation in Msundwe to a war zone, saying many men and youths were no longer visible in the area during the operation.
Police officers are still conducting patrols in parts of the township, but authorities are yet to provide further details regarding the suspects arrested or when they are expected to appear before court.
