FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and midfielder Mike Mkwate have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, bringing an end to the midfielder’s long association with the club.
The development was confirmed by the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Albert Chigoga, and Mkwate in separate interviews with Times 360. Mkwate’s contract was originally set to expire on 24 September 2026.
Speaking on his departure, the midfielder said he was informed that he was no longer part of head coach Wedson Nyirenda’s plans.
Mkwate first joined the People’s Team in 2016 from Wizards FC and quickly established himself as one of the club’s key midfielders. After five successful seasons, he moved to South African side Polokwane City, before returning to Bullets after one season.
During his time with the club, Mkwate played a crucial role in Bullets’ domestic dominance, helping the team win multiple major trophies, including the club’s historic quadruple in 2023.
His career, however, was tested in June 2023 when he suffered a devastating complete tibiofibular fracture to his right leg during Bullets’ 3-2 defeat to Silver Strikers in the Castel Challenge Cup launch match at Bingu National Stadium.
The injury, which involved both bones in his lower right leg, forced him to leave the pitch on a stretcher and sidelined him for several months. At the time, Bullets’ medical team projected a return to action in late October or early November following surgery, immobilisation and rehabilitation.
Then-assistant coach Peter Mponda described the injury as a major setback for the club.
“The defeat is not as painful as his injury. You saw how he mesmerized the midfield, and it’s very unfortunate that we lost him to that awful injury. We are hoping to see him back in action very soon,” Mponda said at the time.
Mkwate successfully battled back from the serious injury and returned to competitive football, demonstrating resilience and determination during his recovery.
His departure marks the end of a memorable chapter with Bullets, where he earned admiration for his work ethic, leadership and contributions to one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
