Collins Kalanda, 22, one of the prisoners recently pardoned by President Peter Mutharika, was rescued from an angry mob after he was allegedly caught attempting to steal goats in Ntchisi.
Ntchisi Police spokesperson Salomy Zgambo confirmed the incident, saying police officers rescued Kalanda on Wednesday after receiving reports that an angry crowd was assaulting him.
According to Zgambo, Kalanda allegedly attempted to steal goats belonging to Yamikani Phiri at a goat pen in Chimwankhuku Village. Community members reportedly caught him in the act and began beating him before police intervened.
Kalanda, who comes from Chayamba Village under Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi District, is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
