A 43-year-old man has died after being attacked and trampled by an elephant at Zalengela 1 Village under Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District.

Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Jacob Khembo, said the incident occurred on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after three elephants were spotted roaming around Chimphuno Hills. Wildlife officers were deployed to drive the animals back to Thuma Forest Reserve.

According to Khembo, the elephants became agitated after some community members gathered and allegedly provoked them while game rangers were escorting the animals back to the forest.

During the commotion, one of the elephants charged at Chiunguza Henderson, inflicting multiple injuries. He was rushed to Sharpvale Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have since urged members of the public to keep a safe distance from wild animals and allow wildlife officers to handle such operations without interference.
