Police in Zomba are investigating the death of a 23-year-old woman, Assistant Lecture at University of Malawi (UNIMA) Mary Hamba Nyirenda, who was found dead at her residence in Zakazaka, Zomba City, on the evening of 19 July 2026.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Zomba Police Station, Constable Andrew Mwale, said preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had undergone a surgical procedure at Banja La Mtsogolo Clinic on 30 June 2026.
It is reported that on 18 July 2026, the deceased complained that the surgical wound had reopened causing her severe pain and making it difficult for her to sleep.
Mwale said at around 20:00 hours on 19 July 2026, the deceased locked herself inside her bedroom and when family members repeatedly called her she gave no response which prompted her uncle to force the door open using an axe and found her hanging from a cupboard door.
According to Mwale, police officers visited the scene and took the body to Zomba Central Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the actual cause of death.
