Sex Workers in peaceful demonstrations over COVID-19 measures

Members of Female Sex Workers Association have marched to Lilongwe City Councils’ Civic Offices where, among others, are asking the government to allow drinking joints to be opened from 2pm to 12 am from Monday to Thursday.

They argue that their welfare too has been affected by Covid-19, hence drinking places should be allowed to open up to midnight because they are their offices.

They further contend that from Friday to Sunday there should be no restriction.

Executive Director for the Female Sex Workers’ Association, Zinenani Majawa also said the protests in Lilongwe are also meant to bring to the attention of the public issues of stigma related to sex work.

She, particularly, mentions police abuse of sex workers as an item high on the list. Majawa says police officers sexually abuse prostitutes.

Earlier Lilongwe District Commissioner refused to receive their petition.
