Court jails man to six years for hacking wife over sex denial

The Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 24, 2021 sentenced a man to 6 years in prison after he stabbed his wife for denying him sex on grounds that she had just given birth.

The convict, Dzongwe Evance, was found guilty on Monday May 24 2021 on a charge of acts intended to cause grievous harm.

The offence is contrary to Section 235 (a) of the Penal code.

According to Lilongwe police deputy publicist Foster Benjamin the court heard that the convict Evance committed the crime on March 8 2021 at Njirayamalimba Village in Traditional Authority Masumbankhunda.

Benjamin said the convict demanded sex from his wife who had a newly born baby.

“The wife denied him his conjugal rights, attracting his anger which culminated into her severe beatings. The court learnt that Evance went on stabbing his wife on her neck until she became unconscious. He was later arrested and taken to court where he pleaded not guilty.

“Four witnesses were thrown against him and he was found guilty as earlier charged. Inspector Bottoman asked for a harshest sentence, arguing Evance had acted inhumanely. In his mitigation, Evance pleaded with the court to forgive him so that he could go back home and look after his newly born child,” added police publicist

Benjamin added, “Passing judgement, Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa quashed Evance’s mitigation and instead condemned his beastly character. He went on to order him to spend the next six years behind bars to warn others”.

The convict Evance aged 27, comes from Pokonkhewa Village, T.A Authority Masumbankhunda in Lilongwe District.
