Harassed For Dowry, Doctor’s Wife Burns Self To Death

A woman allegedly ended her life by setting herself, reportedly due to harassment over demand for dowry. The incident occurred at Majra village under the limits of Sahnewal police station in Ludhiana district of Punjab.

As per reports, the now-deceased woman, identified as Mandeep Kaur, tied the knot with Balram Singh, a doctor by profession, around two and a half years ago. One year after the wedding, the couple was blessed with a baby girl.

On Monday night, Mandeep allegedly set herself on fire, following which she was dashed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The medics there referred her to another medical facility. She succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday morning.

Mandeep’s father, Shinderpal Singh, alleged that his daughter was being harassed and physically assaulted by her husband and his family members over dowry.

“Soon after the wedding, the accused started harassing Mandeep for dowry. They would often thrash her too. Several times, the matter was taken up with the panchayat, but every time it ended with a compromise,” a report by The Times of India quoted Shinderpa Singh.

Police have booked Mandeep’s husband Balram Singh, mother-in-law Rajwant Kaur, father-in-law Chand Singh, sister-in-law Rajwinder Kaur and her husband Kulveer Singh under sections 304 B (dowry death) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
